The nation-state has characterized the Moroccan female citizen as simultaneously modern, secular, and Islamic, while religious discourse has framed the nationalist vision as hopelessly enslaved to Western secularism, suggesting that the Moroccan woman needs to "return" to an authentic Muslim identity.
Based on two years of fieldwork conducted in the city of Fes, Rachel Newcomb's Women of Fes offers valuable insights into the everyday lives of Moroccan women. Newcomb evokes the struggles middle-class women face as they challenge and modify competing ideologies to create new forms of identity in work, family, and urban space. Simultaneously, the book situates women's lives within larger processes, such as globalization, human rights, and the construction of national identity.

excellent academic work and a great read

It's been a very long time since I've read an academic work that I couldn't put down, but this book is exactly that. Rachel Newcomb's _Women of Fes_ is compelling, objective but compassionate, academically thorough, theoretically and analytically precise, and accessible to those who may be new to Morocco, the Arab world in general, or anthropological theory. As someone who once lived in Morocco, I highly recommend this book not only for its valuable intellectual contributions but equally because it's a genuinely riveting and absorbing read.

a fabulous resource for anthropology classes

While I highly recommend Rachel Newcomb's stunning ethnography to anyone with an interest in contemporary Morocco, the Middle East, and also gender, I shall focus here on the suitability of this book for undergraduate classes (especially, but not exclusively, anthropology courses on the Middle East and on gender, as well as general introductory classes on anthropology, fieldwork, and ethnography). My comments derive from my own experience using this book in a course entitled, "Class and Gender in the Middle East." Newcomb's ethnography is not only beautifully written, but it is also highly accessible to students first encountering academic work in these fields. Through an intimate depiction of the lives of three individual women, each of a different generation and with dissimilar aspirations (but each of the increasingly beleaguered middle-class), Newcomb succeeds in engaging her readers in the exigencies of, inter alia, family law debate (the mudawana reforms), urban rumors, and middle-class nostalgia. Moreover, through ethnographic examples that are timely, compelling, and memorable, Newcomb offers a very nuanced portrayal of the various conflicts and desires that preoccupy contemporary Fassi women. For example, students will come to understand why some Fassi women would actively support the existent family code (pre 2003-reforms), even though its laws would seem to disadvantage Moroccan women as a whole. These kind of nuanced discussions are especially critical given today's misconceptions about the supposed incompatibility of "Islamism," "modernity," and human "rights." As such, Women of Fes is a welcome contemporary substitute for some of the more classic ethnographies focusing on Middle Eastern women's everyday lives. My only hesitation in recommending this book for course use is its hardcover price; a paperback edition could make this a classroom standard.

Very informative and readable

This academic analysis of the situation of women in a Moroccan city can be read and enjoyed by ordinary readers who are interested to learn more about Morocco, about the status of women in developing societies, and/or about the complicated influences of religion and tradition in these situations. The author follows the stories of several individual Moroccan women as they make their way in a still-traditional but rapidly changing society. Islam plays an important, but much more subtle and adaptable role in these stories than most Western readers might expect. The prose is lively and the topics covered provide valuable background in understanding many of today's headlines.
