dry writing with some good content

As I plowed through the vague academese of the introduction, I began to regret buying this book. However, some of the content was more rewarding, and I began to enjoy some of Intellectuals Incorporated. It is perhaps unfortunate that Vanderlan never defines “intellectual,” that his writing style is dry and that his descriptions of writer’s struggles with their moral responsibilities don’t always sound like the thoughts of real live people. However, TIME’s response to and participation in mid-twentieth-century history were important, and the descriptions of Whittaker Chambers and Walker Evans in particular are interesting.
There are many syntactical errors. “Waited” rather than “weighted” may be a publishing error (“The authors Shramm had secured were too heavily waited toward Europe”) but Vandelan really should know that “Seeking a job outside government, Fortune seemed like a good fit for Galbraith” means that Fortune was seeking a job outside government, not Galbraith. “Like many young college students, his aspirations remained vague” means that his aspirations were young college students. There are many more examples of literary clumsiness, including his sudden leaps from chronological narration to flatly-stated literary criticism, with no segues.
