Subjectivity in Marriage

This book is a surprisingly accessible analysis of our cultural inheritance from the early modern period in the form of marriage and our attitudes towards it.
While many people argue that individuals can make marriage whatever they wish, this isn't strictly true. Married individuals face not only legal restrictions and standards for what a marriage is, but also inestimable amounts of social pressure from literature, the media, tradition, and religious dogma as well as acquaintances, family, and friends. So what is marriage, and why does it so often lead to violence?
Dolan argues that our concept of marriage as a process of making two people "one flesh" is left over from the early modern period, and that this concept creates an environment in which only one subject can survive in marriage, an economy of scarcity. This not only causes marriage to be looked at askance by feminists, but breeds an environment hospitable to conflict. If one person in a marriage is not willing to give up her (as it often is the woman) subjectivity, and have her will absorbed into the will of her partner, then the marriage becomes a struggle between the two. In essence, marriage, as it is legally and culturally understood, is a logical contradiction. Two people cannot become one, and when they try, either conflict or the complete fragmentation and submergence of one individual is the result.
Dolan's study is focused, thorough, and well-written. If you enjoy it, I would also recommend Susan Squire's slightly less scholarly, and slightly more snarky I Don't: A Contrarian History of Marriage.
