Unable simply to transplant English political and legal traditions across the Atlantic, Quaker leaders gradually forged a creole civic culture that secured Quaker authority in an increasingly diverse colony. By mythologizing the colony's early settlement and casting Friends as the ideal guardians of its uniquely free and peaceful society, they succeeded in establishing a shared civic culture in which Quaker dominance seemed natural and just.

A page turner

For me it was. But I'm a Quaker, an artifact restorer in S.E. Pennsylvania, and a devotee of the local culture and history.
If you don't already know, it's definitely an academic book. There are plenty of charts and citations in the voluminous notes. The reader will also notice plenty of post-modernisms: the body as a site of punishments, speech acts and so on. They date the book, but they don't get in the way of the narrative (oops). The theme is that we might profitably expand the term "creolization" to include situations such as those that occured between the actors in this area and time (Indians, Swedes, Quakers, et al.) in Pa. That seems a helpful suggestion.
Through a close reading of this book, I've come to much deeper understanding of the nitty-gritty of the social interactions which occurred among various groups in SE Pa and Del from 1680 and 1700. It puts a lot more color into some of the more traditional telling one gets of history.
Perhaps as important to me was an almost microscopic examination of the "creolization" of American Quakerism in the period. As often, it's so hard to put our own concerns and labels into just one party of the past. Interesting to see the early divergence in the Friends movement on each side of the ocean. You don't know who you are till you know where you came from.
It also gives an interesting picture of William Penn as a legal theorizer and how his reading of Oceana and the continuing development of the Quaker meeting heirarchy was the background of the well thought out original constitution of the province. Not a democracy by a long shot, though pretty, but not always, damn liberal. Holy Experiment, a utopian venture in one way but even more deeply from the Friends' perspective to be a holy EXPERIENCE (the true meaning of the word contemporaneously, the author most helpfully notes). The kingdom come. Put that way, sounds suspiciously like those lamented Puritans up north. That's an important insight. We decendents of some of those lines forget those then CRUCIAL aspects of religion for our ancients. Hard to keep firmly in mind the millenianism always in the background, too. And, of course, we see how that utopia began immediatly to morph, to creolize. I don't think we see any great world historical lessons here, but it's really good empirical history. As a tag, I should add that anyone who is interested in legal theory may like this book as the author deals closely with court material in his accounts. Good book.
