About the Author
John Steinbeck, born in Salinas, California, in 1902, grew up in a fertile agricultural valley, about twenty-five miles from the Pacific Coast. Both the valley and the coast would serve as settings for some of his best fiction. In 1919 he went to Stanford University, where he intermittently enrolled in literature and writing courses until he left in 1925 without taking a degree. During the next five years he supported himself as a laborer and journalist in New York City, all the time working on his first novel, Cup of Gold (1929).
After marriage and a move to Pacific Grove, he published two California books, The Pastures of Heaven (1932) and To a God Unknown (1933), and worked on short stories later collected in The Long Valley (1938). Popular success and financial security came only with Tortilla Flat (1935), stories about Monterey’s paisanos. A ceaseless experimenter throughout his career, Steinbeck changed courses regularly. Three powerful novels of the late 1930s focused on the California laboring class: In Dubious Battle (1936), Of Mice and Men (1937), and the book considered by many his finest, The Grapes of Wrath (1939). The Grapes of Wrath won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize in 1939.
Early in the 1940s, Steinbeck became a filmmaker with The Forgotten Village (1941) and a serious student of marine biology with Sea of Cortez (1941). He devoted his services to the war, writing Bombs Away (1942) and the controversial play-novelette The Moon is Down (1942).Cannery Row (1945), The Wayward Bus (1948), another experimental drama, Burning Bright(1950), and The Log from the Sea of Cortez (1951) preceded publication of the monumental East of Eden (1952), an ambitious saga of the Salinas Valley and his own family’s history.
The last decades of his life were spent in New York City and Sag Harbor with his third wife, with whom he traveled widely. Later books include Sweet Thursday (1954), The Short Reign of Pippin IV: A Fabrication (1957), Once There Was a War (1958), The Winter of Our Discontent (1961),Travels with Charley in Search of America (1962), America and Americans (1966), and the posthumously published Journal of a Novel: The East of Eden Letters (1969), Viva Zapata!(1975), The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights (1976), and Working Days: The Journals of The Grapes of Wrath (1989).
Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962, and, in 1964, he was presented with the United States Medal of Freedom by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Steinbeck died in New York in 1968. Today, more than thirty years after his death, he remains one of America's greatest writers and cultural figures.

Of Mice and Men is beautiful in its simplicity and concision while painting vivid scenes and directly touching on human thought and emotion. George and Lennie, the protagonists, evolve and depend on each other as they navigate through the lonely world. George acts as a father figure to Lennie, who retains a childish innocence while possessing incredible strength. Recognizing the danger of the two characteristics combined, George seeks to protect Lennie, and does so by not only saving him from the dangers of real life, but also defending him against the darkness of hopelessness. However, in the end, George realizes that he cannot forever protect Lennie, as he can only do so much to shield Lennie from reality.
I know that I am sure to be limited in my understanding of this book, but from what I understand, I love it. I especially love how the characters are so well developed - even Curley's wife, who, does not have a name not because Steinbeck disregarded her, but because she is a femme fatale figure who, despite being a 'tart' woman and therefore being supposedly inferior in status to men, is able to have such a great impact on the whole of the story. And it's so interesting that the man who falls into her femme fatale trap isn't ensnared by her beauty or sexuality, but simply because of his childish obsession with touching soft things.
So as a high school student who was “forced” to read this (it was on the summer reading list), I highly recommend this book.

The writing is also fantastic. Setting

A story of two roaming workers with a dream, Of Mice and Men tells a story of ambition versus reality, and the stark truths of being the working class in California during the 30's. Firstly, one of the strongest aspects of this book is the characters. Every character, though not receiving too much attention, or sometimes never being named, is identifiable and distinct in their own way. Even having read it once, I could remember many of the character's personalities, goals, and quirks, as well as their interactions with each other. It's almost as if we get to glimpse at a group of characters just passing by, fully realized, just not overstaying their welcome. The writing is also fantastic. Setting, time, characters, and circumstance are all communicated with brevity and simplicity, giving a thought provoking experience that is both complex in content, but approachable in style. The story is triumphant, somber, crushing, and hopeful, all in only 107 pages. Even so, I feel the length prevents what could have been an even better story, just in that Of Mice and Men is really a collection of scenes that relate to each other. This isn't even a fair criticism, as what we already have is great on its own, and fattening a story isn't always a good idea, but I have to wonder what this story could have been if it just had a few more chapters. Overall, its an easy, quick, yet intelligent read that older audiences will enjoy.

I can't get enough of this guy. WHHHYYY didn't I appreciate it in high school?! Too young and distracted, I suppose.
